The project of the

Servigliano Prison Camp

House of Remembrance

The aim of the project is to create a centre, the 'House of Remembrance', in which to collect documentary material, maintain contacts and welcome visitors, to educate young people and future generations in the values of peace, democracy and solidarity.

This does not require significant rebuilding work, but only the creation of a link between the place as it appears today and its use in the recent past.

For this reason we are interested in making contact:

For this reason we are looking for:

All this material will be used to create a permanent exhibition.

The International Dimension

The international dimension of the 'House of Remembrance' is due to the enormous number of people who passed through the Camp in Servigliano. The Camp was built at the beginning of the twentieth century to accommodate about 10,000 prisoners. Halved in size in the Fascist period, it was used to hold up to 5,000 prisoners in the Second World War. Finally, it became a reception centre for refugees.

Taking this into account, we can make a reliable estimate of the number of people involved:

It would therefore not be unrealistic to think that many thousands of people felt the earth of the Camp under their feet and spent many long days - if not years - there, and probably still remember those days with a mixture of excitement and pain. Certainly many of them are no longer with us - too much time has passed - but there must be many still alive who would love to remember and revisit the place they came to know in those sad times. Some English and American former prisoners already return to retrace their steps, to visit what remains of the Camp, to re-establish a relationship with the people of Servigliano or of the villages around who helped them in their moment of need.
